March 8 40 women arrested in Sudan, INDICATED AGAINST RAPE
(AFP) - Khartoum, March 8 - The Sudanese police arrested 40 women who had gathered to protest against the rape of Safiya Ishaq, an activist of 25 years, raped last month by three members of the security forces.
Sixty women were taken to the streets in defiance of Omdurman that the presence of police in riot gear waited.
shouted:''Freedom '! Just the rapes! Do not rape women,''the protesters wanted to give its support to Safiya, Feb. 13 allegedly raped by three soldiers after being arrested in front of a shop Khartoum.
The police also arrested Rabah al-Mahdi, daughter of former premier and opposition leader Sadeq al-Mahdi. The women were taken away by security vans - told an AFP reporter - and one of them and 'was taken to club' cause he continued to sing backing vocals for the rights of women.
Last week, Human Rights Watch accused the army and the national security of having beaten, sexually abused and tortured the students arrested during demonstrations organized in the wake of some of the ones dropped in Tunisia and Egypt.
